| Sand Goblin Enduro, Roselawn IN Sunday April 22, 2007 As I sit here behind my computer on a rainy Tuesday afternoon I can’t seem to get the thought out of my head that “Sand Goblin Enduro” must be Latin for “fugengoodtime”! I am quite sure that you cannot cram more fun into one day than what was had by Team P&G offroad racing’s Speedy Pete and Gus at the Sand Goblin Enduro in Roselawn, IN this past weekend! Gus and I decided that we would head down a bit earlier than normal in an effort to procure a nice parking spot and get the Moose Racing gear and hard parts out for display. I pulled the pin from my humble abode at 10:30 AM en- route for a rendezvous with Gus in the great state of Illinois at high noon o’clock. We loaded Gus’s gear into the Coyote Ugly with as much excitement to go racing as a kid has running down the stairs on Christmas morning to see what Santa as brought. Blasting down I39 all I could think about was, could this year’s race be as much fun as last year? And better yet we looked forward to seeing racing friends that we had not seen since the last race in November! We pulled into the pits and to our amazement the huge green grass pit area was almost full! I mean this pit area is probably 10 acres……as it turns out the Sand Booger Family Enduro had 214 riders! Wow now that is impressive and that explained the full pit area. Very exciting as that is the future of our sport and what our sport needs to grow and prosper! As Gus and I set up camp, kids were walking by and dragging trophies that were larger than they were..and with smiles to match. We shared stickers with them and litened to the stories of there race! After finishing set up, Gus and I took a minute to have a cold Coors Light and chat with folks as they stopped by to check out the ’07 team bikes and the displayed new and fun products Moose Racing has to offer. The big hits were the Red/White and Blue Sahara gear and the Radiator braces. Quite a few riders looked at the guards at the table and then were amazed to see how well the fit and finish of the product translated to the race bikes. As we move thru the year our hope is to bring new products to show to riders as well as to improve our presentation of these products, right now Gus has a right up of the mounting of these radiator braces. You can count on Team P&G Offroad racing to offer truthful hands on reports of the ongoing testing of these products, given Moose Racings track record of bringing top quality products and at a realistic price point makes this job an easy and fun one! We capped the night off with an excellent meal of Spaghetti and meatballs made by our own in house chef “Gusto” that is what we call him when he is cooking, We were fortunate enough to share this meal with our good friends and racing counterparts Da Pope Brian Mullane and Hollywood Dan Mancl…Da Pope blessed the meal and Hollywood…well he just brought his sweet looking hairdo to the party. After the meal we sent them packing to there hotel with a full belly that is for sure. Just as we finished up eating, Team Late Bloomers…er baby boomers…er well I am not sure but they are old and still fast….Duane Eller and Mean Dean Breci pulled into camp just in time to have a beer and crash out in the front of the Coyote Ugly Mobile. Sunday morning was ushered into us by a crazed local blasting up the highway on his un-mufflered fourwheeler.. but hey….how cool is it that the county lets them ride on the roads and better yet, let us race on them! The sun was shinning and a great race seemed inevitable. Gus and I had drawn a Row 28 start which promised to be a good number, early enough to have the trail burnt in but not so late as to have it beat out either. We pulled up to the start and scoped out the “Escargo” field special test the crew had laid out for the riders. This would prove to be quite fun, almost ½ of a mile spiraling in and spiraling back out that whole distance gave the riders a chance to practice there flat track technique…the good thing was we did not have to push thru this section and that allowed us to ride at a nice pace and get warmed up before hitting woods for some real racing. On the same minute as Gus and I was AA rider Eric Briggs, Craig Scholten and Terry Franke. Unbenouced to Gus and I was that fact that Eric was an AA rider, one of the riders on our minute told us he was a 250A rider. Right off the start he took off and put some distance on Gus and I in the special test section….all I could think about was that this was essentially the first race of the year for the both of us (Marion was a survival race for me) and that Eric was going to school us all day long. Luckily for Gus and I once we hit the woods we were all together and began what was a day long freight train thru the woods together. We all traded the lead and had a blast doing it. The first 5 checks had Eric and I carding 5’s and Gus a 8 ( there was some discrepancy in the trail and it had some riders missing a short piece of trail right before the 5th check allowing them, me included to gain some points), on the second check our computers put us at 40 seconds into our minute, but the check crew marked us a minute down, we some some discussion there, but we conceded the penalty point and moved on. We zero’d the 6th check and somehow burned the 7th check, along with about half of the A riders giving us two unearned penalty points putting me at 7, Gus at 11 and Eric with no hot points and a score of 5. Thru the next sequence of checks we zero 5 more checks and pick up some late points. At the finish our scores would find us all close. Gus had some problems with gravity and a stuck throttle but still manages to crack a smile and a Corona Light as he crashed into a chair. There he and I discuss the days events and began to get out of our gear! After 97 ground miles I found myself hardly sweaty at all, entirely due to the brand new and improved Sahara gear. New vented gussets in the gloves prove to work wonders, in addition to new materials used in the construction of the pants and jersey allow for a true improvement in venting on this years gear over last years already well vented gear. I give the Sahara gear an A++ and a must have for any gearbag. Gus and I load up and decide we should begin the long trek home, thus we miss the awards and protest period. A call from Ryan Moss signals a 200A win for me and fourth place finish for Gus, however unofficial posted results show me in second. Time will tell what happened there. Scores for the day : Place/Class Rider Points 3rd AA Ryan Moss 22pts 6th AA Scott Hoffman 26pts 1st 200A Speedy Pete 27pts 4th Open A Gus Drone 39pts 8th Sen A Dean Breci 40pts 2nd SS Duane Eller 41pts 16th Senior B Da Pope 47pts 8th Vet B Hollywood Mancl 53pts 14th Vet B Ben Eggum 109pts C Class Andy Kelly 96pts A big shout out to Mr Biscuit (aka Andy Kelly) on his first ride on his 200EXC and a great finish to boot. His good wife kept us inline all day and brought a womans touch to the races. A get well to Steve Wise who took a fall in the early goings of the race and suffered a dislocated shoulder, luckily for him his face took the brunt of the fall and perhaps saved him from further injury! In misc. notes: We (P&G Offroad) suffered a loss on Sunday at the Enduro......in the gusty conditions our display EZ up (see picture before the loss) was viscously taken from this earth and put somewhere else...luckily Buster the "Modeling Technician" suffered no ill effects in the events leading up the incident or after it! Our prayers were answered when we found out he escaped without injury. We have a new Moose Racing Tent on the way and it should be put into action in a couple of months, until then we will put sun screen on Buster to prevent any skin lesions from forming or further burning of his velvet like exoskin. We will be employing a Moose Racing Utiltity EZ up until the arrival of the new unit! Till next time, here’s Dirt in your face! Speedy Pete and Gus |
