On April 29 the fourth round of the district 16 enduro series headed to the north woods for the first time of the 2007 season. The race is located near Pearson, Wisconsin. The race is hosted by the Madison Motorcycle club and for those don’t know, Madison is about 3 ½ hours from Pearson and they spend multiple weekends in advance of the race getting the course ready. So needless to say they put some serious time and driving into hosting this event. The unusual aspect to this race is that it is all off road. There are no roads to ride on to get to the next section of woods. This means that headlight, taillight, and license plates are not required. For the most part this event is just strait up racing for entire event. When we arrived on Saturday afternoon we were just in time to watch the awards being handed out to all of the riders that participated in the kid’s event. Not only did each one have a “One Off” trophy in their hands but also a half eat’n ice cream bar with a side order of a huge smile. Sign up the night before is located at the local establishment just up the road and at the end of the sign on Saturday night there were just over 40 riders that signed up. This year there were some new faces at Saturday night sign up as some of the northern Illinois fast guys decided to come and pay a visit. Among them were Ryan Moss, (who shows up every year), Scott Hoffman, and Kiel Mueller. When we got back to the pit area the bonfire was already blazing and the work crew was well into their Wisconsin carb loading session. I learned from last year and decided I better hit the hay and get some sleep as I knew the next day would require full functionality. Duane Eller on the other hand at age fifty something decided he needed some extra carb’s for the next day so proceeded to do his best at prepping for the day to come (rumor had it he was one of the last around the campfire). The next morning we were welcomed with clear blue skies and temperatures in the low 70’s. By Sunday morning there was a full pit area with a lot of riders showing up on Sunday morning as well as Wisconsin fast guy J.D. Frieble. J.D. had raced the District 16 Hare Scramble the day before at Aztalan were he finished 1st overall pulled the pin and headed north to the enduro. When I talked to J.D. before the race he mentioned he was in the emergency room just a couple of days before with the excruciating pain of trying to pass a kidney stone, talk about a dedicated racer! Key time was at 10:00 on Sunday morning. The first section was about 10 miles of great single track. At the first check most A and some B riders were required to watch their speed to so they didn’t burn the check. After the first check there was a nice reset and then a sneaky hot check going into the next section. This hot check also had the best looking workers of the day (not you Speedy!). After this check it was off to the races with the 3rd check just before gas. This check had a select few riders that were able to zero it with a hand full of 1’s. Ryan Moss, Scott Hoffman and J.D. Frieble all had zero’s at the gas stop. Kiel Mueller, Mike Multer, and myself notched up 1 point at gas. After gas there was another hot check and then it was full race speed to the next check. The next check was check number 5 and five riders had a zero at this check, Frieble, Moss, Hoffman, Mueller, and Drone. Check number 6 was right before the A cutoff and this check allowed most riders to get back on time. The A riders were treated with some pretty technical terrain in the last section as it wound it way 8 miles back to the pits. At the conclusion of check 7 J.D Frieble emerged on top with a big fat zero for the day. He made it to the last check with just two seconds to spare. Close behind was Moss with a 1 on the day and Hoffman with a 2. Mueller dropped a 3 at the last check for a total of 4 points on the day. The un-official top five for the day was: J.D Frieble – 0 Ryan Moss – 1 Scott Hoffman – 2 Kiel Mueller – 4 Heath Drone – 5 Other notable notable rides for the day were Brian (Dean) Breci – 9 Brian Terry – 9 Duane (Too much carbo loading) Eller – 10 Bobby (C class sand bagger) Kau – 5 (short course) Andy (Mr. Biscuit can’t remember your last name) – 36 Everyone that received a trophy was greeted with a one of a kind trophy that was hand made by Speedy Pete Laubmeier. Hats off to the entire Madison Motorcycle club for hosting this great event and hopefully the rider turnout this year will foster more races in the years to come. Heath Drone |
